Carmichael says Queen’s speech will be empty spin and ignore devolution

“We will see is the kind of empty spin that has made the country so sick of this Government,” said the Liberal Democrat Shadow Scotland Secretary.

Commenting ahead of the Queen’s Speech, Alistair Carmichael said:

“This amounts to little more than political posturing by Gordon Brown, as we can expect few of the measures to become law ahead of an election.

“Labour has already made clear that it plans to hit the Calman Commission’s proposals on improving devolution into the long grass. They should have seized this chance to move ahead with giving more powers to the Scottish Parliament, while reforming the political system in Westminster.

“Instead what we will see is the kind of empty spin that has made the country so sick of this Government. Gordon Brown’s dithering on Calman has left the door wide open for the nationalists to pursue their indulgent and pointless crusade on breaking away from the UK.”
