Responding to Philip Hammond’s admission on the Daily Politics on Wednesday 23 June that families earning between £25,000 and £30,000 will lose their tax credits as a result of the Budget, Labour’s Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Yvette Cooper MP said:
“Government ministers have now admitted the truth that George Osborne tried to hide yesterday. The Budget will punish hard-pressed families and children by taking away tax credits from families on just £30,000. A couple each earning just £15,000 could now find themselves losing over £500 a year in much needed tax credit because of this. Just as with their unfair plan to raise VAT, the Tories kept their true intentions secret until after the election. This gives the lie to David Cameron’s promise to lead the most family friendly government ever.”
